Riverwalk
In the heart of the city is the Riverwalk District. Climb the stairs from street level to the Riverwalk, where a lush, shady retreat awaits. There, the San Antonio River is lined on both sides by footbridges that are closed to bicycles and motorized vehicles. Hotels and shops line the Riverwalk, and the delicious smells emanating from the restaurants attract passersby. Many of the buildings have both street level and Riverwalk level entrances. Visitors can take relaxing river cruises, and some restaurants offer lunch and dinner cruises.
Poplar
Just steps from the Riverwalk is the famous Alamo, 300 Alamo Plaza, which stands as a testament to American courage. On March 6, 1836, the 189 men defending the Alamo fell to General Santa Ana’s Mexican troops after a 13-day siege. Today, the only two buildings left standing from the original fort are the chapel and the long barracks. Take a free guided tour of the grounds, then visit the Long Barracks Museum and Library to learn more about the fort from the exhibits there.
The little village
Adjacent to the Riverwalk is La Villita, a collection of restaurants, craft stores, and other stores. Stroll among the shops that carry a variety of works, such as glass figurines, original paintings, and ceramics.
Shop at Market Square
Another popular shopping district is Market Square, 514 W. Commerce, designed to resemble an authentic market in Mexico. Here you will find pewter and enamel bracelets, shiny porcelain wall crosses, clothing, and more. There are additional stores located across the street at Farmers Market Square.
Churches
San Antonio is famous for its beautiful missionary churches along the San Antonio River. In the 18th century, Spain built the missions as part of its effort to convert the area’s Native Americans to Catholicism. In addition to Mission San Antonio de Valero in El Álamo, visitors can tour Mission Concepción, Mission San Francisco de la Espada, Mission San José, and Mission San Juan Capistrano.
Culture
If you’re craving a dose of culture, the San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W Jones, is the place to go. The museum houses an excellent collection of European, Asian, Latin American and ancient art.
And the Zoo!
Finally, on a nice day, you can visit the San Antonio Zoo, 3903 N. St. Mary’s St., which includes the usual mix of monkeys and zebras, as well as a butterfly garden, an area for the preschool crowd, and a wonderful collection of unique birds.
