The repair of poetry – Is this the duty of a poet to straighten through poetry?
Poetry offers an ideal world that eliminates the defects of the world of facts, since the ideal presents a perfect image of the imperfect world. By straightening we understand satisfaction, compensation for a wrong suffered or our loss as a result of getting up again in an upright position. This is the dictionary definition of rectify.
The word ‘repair’ means to repair, restore, rectify something that is wrong. The subject that Seamus Heany deals with in ‘The repair of poetry’ is not new. The nature and purpose of poetry has been a subject of practical importance to all who are interested in poetry.
To set Heany right means to correct something that is unfair or wrong. It also means comfort, compensation, improve or reassure. So rectifying poetry means eliminating or correcting erroneous notions that exist in the prevailing world. The question of the repair of poetry contains if poetry is of any use, if it gives confidence to man, if it gives some security or not, if it is an aesthetic work or a pragmatic work.
Having defined the meaning of straightening, I will now discuss whether a poet can straighten through poetry. Is this your duty to straighten through poetry?
In my opinion, a poet is an important part of a nation who can not only rectify through poetry but also restore the pride of a nation, can rectify wrongdoing, and can also amend the state of a nation. In support of my notions I would like to place the example of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, titled as ‘the poet of the orient’. He not only straightened himself through his poetry, but also blazed a path to calm and betterment, restoration and rejuvenation of a swooning nation.
Poetry is not only the words that define the physical appearance of the loved one, or that explain the facial expressions of a beauty that you meet in your daily life and fall in love with at first sight. Poetry is the voice of the depths of one. It is not limited or should not be limited to simply defining the traits of the beloved or one’s feelings towards the beloved or simply making a confession of being in love.
Poetry has a vast canvas to cover, to paint a picture of the wide and limitless world. It deserves the explanations of the fate of humanity, the fate of humans, and can also show how a human can become a human.
Allama Iqbal’s poetry instills the spirit and sentiments of restoration from decay. Allama Iqbal’s poetry straightened itself out in a way that levitated a nation from inhibition to freedom.
Having said that, I am very sure that a poet can straighten through poetry, the need is to perform his homework and put the divine thoughts of poetry on the right track to straighten through poetry.
