Why You May Have Green Poop – 5 Shocking Reasons

Many people are alarmed when they see green bowel movements, especially if they occur for no apparent reason. Fortunately, there are most likely no problems and the green bowel movement is perfectly harmless. On the other hand, there could be an indication that there is a much more serious problem behind the green poop. But the big question remains: how do you know what is harmful and what is harmless?

You should first examine your most recent changes to see if you have experienced any of these recently. If so, there is a chance that whatever has been changed is causing the green stools and there is no cause for alarm. Some of these changes are:

  1. Increased water intake: There is a common correlation, especially in children, between the amount of water ingested, especially when combined with a sudden reduction in solid food intake, and green stools. It usually occurs in children who are coping with an illness. Increasing electrolytes to keep them hydrated turns their poop green and is no cause for alarm.
  2. postnasal drip: Believe it or not, swallowing postnasal drip, in rare cases, can cause green stools. If you’ve been sick recently, postnasal drip can cause green stools.

If any of these have happened recently, fear not! The stool will return to its normal color when the cause is gone. However, there may be other things that are wrong that have been shown to cause green stools and require action:

  1. Salmonella: This is one of the more benign effects of Salmonella poisoning. There are many other symptoms that will trigger your Salmonella alert, so unless you have those other symptoms, chances are this is not the cause.
  2. giardia: Again, this is a more moderate symptom of Giardia, and unless you have the other symptoms, you most likely do not have Giardia.
  3. Acute bowel disorder: This is probably the most common reason for greenish stools, and luckily the easiest to treat. It is sometimes (but not always) accompanied by constipation or diarrhea, and it can occur for a variety of reasons.

If you find that you are most likely looking at what could be the result of a mild intestinal disorder, the cure is very simple and easy. A good intestinal cleanse, or colon cleanse, is one of the easiest ways to remove toxins and feces from your body that are likely to cause this disorder. According to recent research, the colon of a typical healthy adult contains between five and twenty-five pounds of toxic fecal matter within the colon, which is a prime target for growing a bowel disorder.
