As an entrepreneur, you probably already use the creative right side of your brain more. However, there have been people over the decades who have argued that a business person should rely more on his logical left side if he wants to be successful.

Perhaps the change in the global perception of what it takes to succeed in the marketplace has been driven by the need for companies to somehow separate themselves from their competition. As the world becomes more homogeneous, it becomes harder for companies to stand out from the crowd, and the best way to do that is to come up with an inventive new strategy.

Much of that new thinking was sparked by the massive outsourcing of services to providers abroad. As industry becomes more automated and cheap labor is sought abroad, American companies have had to change their approach if they were to survive. In a strange turn of events, large companies have been borrowing a page from the small business playbook, realizing that they cannot compete by economy of scale when the foreign hammer is stacked against them. In recent years, those big companies have begun to sound small, emphasizing their compassion for their employees and their ability to see the big picture beyond short-term profits.

Pulling off such a radically new strategy (for big companies, anyway) will require a great deal of creative right-brain thinking, as big companies try to reconnect with their customers in a new way. Small business owners have long used this strategy as their main way to compete with their big competitors, but now it is the big American companies that are threatened in an increasingly global economy.

We are talking about survival here. Either American companies position themselves in a new and strong way or they will not survive. It’s that easy. Customers have infinitely more options today, so serving them and letting them know you care about them is crucial to winning them over and keeping them from going to the competition.

Of course, being a successful businessman requires a strong balance between left and right brain functions. You have to attract and keep customers, but you also have to manage your business wisely. It takes a well-balanced approach to stay in business these days, whether you’re a one-man operation or a giant corporation. So don’t be afraid to let your right brain run free from time to time. You may come up with a creative idea that will logically help strengthen your company’s bottom line.
