According to a recent survey, 45% of women and 55% of men have been unfaithful in a relationship. And those are just the ones who have been caught or admitted to it, so the true numbers are probably considerably higher. What is even more worrying is that these numbers are increasing all the time.
So if infidelity is so common, what are the main reasons for it?
Men and women tend to have affairs for different reasons. Men are more likely to cheat for the excitement and physical satisfaction, while women are more likely to look to someone else for the affection they don’t get from their partner or spouse.
Whatever the case, people have affairs because they are not completely satisfied in their relationship or marriage.
Instead of being open with their partner, telling them how they feel, and trying to put the missing ingredients in their current relationship, they tend to look elsewhere for the answers.
The question is why?
One main reason is that many couples don’t know how to communicate effectively. Small problems are swept under the rug instead of being resolved. In isolation, they may not be as important or damaging to the relationship, but over time all these little issues add up to one big one.
Another reason is that it is becoming easier to cheat. Technical advances, such as cell phones and the Internet, have opened up many new opportunities. It is becoming easier to find a solution outside of your relationship than perhaps to face some of the sensitive issues that need to be resolved.
So people end up having affairs that they later regret so often. The damage is already done, they wish they could fix things but they don’t know how. After all, if they couldn’t solve their relationship problems beforehand, how are they going to do it now when the situation is much more delicate and difficult?
