The present push is not a new fad, although its recent resurgence has prompted many friends, family, and especially partners of pregnant women to start talking about what they are and where they come from.
A push gift, also known as a baby gift, push gift, or baby ornament, is a gift given by the couple to the new mother to commemorate the special occasion of the child’s birth. This celebration is marked by some type of personalized gift, which is traditionally jewelry of any kind.
This unique gift may have its roots in England and India. In England, new mothers received fancy rings to commemorate the birth of their child. The first time the term “push present” was used in print was in 1992 by author Karen Heller. Until that time, the idea of a push gift was largely passed from person to person by word of mouth. Mothers-to-be would leave clues and families would suggest gift ideas. Recently, however, the present push has become a huge media presence for celebrities receiving extravagant gifts. Fashion designer Rachel Zoe received a 10-carat ring from husband Rodger in 2011, reality star Peggy Tanous received a Bentley in 2007, and Mariah Carey received a diamond and sapphire necklace from husband Nick Cannon in 2011 after the birth of his twins. .
There are no set rules of etiquette when it comes to pushing gifts. As etiquette expert Pamela Holland says, “The standard is that there is no standard…This is too intimate to have a rule.” Many women will let their husbands or partners know that they would love to receive a sentimental gift to celebrate the birth of the baby, although many men are now taking it upon themselves to find a meaningful and personal gift for the new mom on their own.
