Pray the Lord’s Prayer: A Fun Christian Preschool Activity

I really hope you like to pray. I am sure that God is hanging on your every word as the Lover of your soul. Our little ones can begin to love prayer and introducing them to the beloved Lord’s Prayer is a perfect place to start. Here’s a fun and creative way to help your preschoolers learn this Jesus prayer. I call it “Pray the Lord’s Prayer”.

This is what you do:
This activity really does not require any preparation. The only thing you, the teacher, need to do is practice delivering the following story along with your actions.

Here is the story:
I can pray to God whenever I want. I can pray to God wherever he wants him to go. Praying to God is simply talking to God. So let’s talk to God right now. Let’s pretend we’re on an adventure going from here to there. I’ll start praying “Our Father in Heaven” as I jump over this river. (Pretend to see a river and “jump” over it.) Now I stretch out my hands to the sky and say, “Hallowed be Thy name.” (Stretch your hands above your head.) Look! There is a tall tree up ahead. (Point to “the tree.”) I love to climb trees! Here we go! As I wrap my hands around the trunk (“wrap” your hands around the “trunk” and pretend to climb for the next few lines), I say, “Your kingdom come.” I’m going to go up a little higher and say, “Your will be done.” Let’s climb a little higher and say: “on earth as it is in heaven.”

Look! We are so high that it seems that we can touch the sky. (Holds one hand up.) Wow! I feel a little dizzy. (Act like you’re dizzy.) We’d better get down from this tree fast. (Quickly “comes down from the tree.”) I feel a little hungry. Look, there’s a picnic basket! (Point to the “picnic basket.”) Let’s see what’s inside and I’ll pray: “Give us this day our daily bread.” oooh! Delicious chicken. (Pretend to eat a chicken thigh.) And cold milk. (Pretend to drink the milk.) Oh dear! I feel a little sleepy. (Give a mock yawn.) I’m going to lie down and as I do I’ll pray, “Forgive us our debts or sins…(Yawns again.)…as we forgive our debtors or those who sinned against us.” us.” OKAY. That’s enough for a nap (sit down or get up from your “nap”).

We have to get back to our adventure. Look! I see a cave ahead. As we tiptoe silently toward the cave, I will pray, “Lead us not into temptation.” (Pretend to tiptoe into the “cave”.) Shhh! I think I hear some snorkeling. (Put your hand to your ear.) I’m going to pray, “deliver us from evil.” The snoring is getting louder (looks scared) and louder and louder. I wonder who is inside. Let’s look inside. (She leans in as if looking inside.) Oh no! It’s a bear! (Shouts, “Ahhh!”) As we flee, I will pray, “For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.” Oh! They were safe! We are back home and I will end my prayer with “Amen!”

Before playing this Christian preschool activity, you may want to introduce the lesson as follows:
Boys and girls, when we pray we are talking to God. God loves when you talk to him or pray to him. You can talk to God about whatever you want. You can tell him when you’re happy. You can tell him when you’re sad. You can ask him for things that you would like to have or things that you need. You can ask him to help your friends. There are so many things you can pray for. Jesus loved to pray to God, his Father. Let’s make a game to help us learn one of the prayers that Jesus prayed. It’s called “The Lord’s Prayer”. Here we go!
