Independent Filmmaking – 3 Quick Tips

Welcome to the world of independent cinema. You’re probably itching to get started. Whether it’s for an online or local film festival, with these quick tips, you’ll have a little better understanding of how to get ahead of the game. The following tips will show you the basics to get started. With time and experience, you’ll be a pro at it. OK let’s go!

  1. Find out what kind of budget you will need for your film. Are you going to be shooting at the baby level, ie you just want to make a quick documentary with little to no money? Or do you go all out and hope to hit a goal with your film? The best ways to earn income for your film depend on your level of work. If you have a job, save half your salary every time you get paid. If you don’t have a job, consider doing donation work or doing chores for people you know for quick cash. In time, you’ll have enough to get a good foundation for your project.
  2. What is your movie going to be about? Do your homework, as teachers and parents would say. Go online or at a library and find out more about the type of subject you want to make an independent film about. Not only will you learn more about it, but you’ll also have better resources to help you further your filmmaking hobby.
  3. Lastly, find out what kind of equipment you will need. If you’re on a budget, stick with the budget type kit. If you’re rich, go for the big boy toys. Some basic equipment would include: a camcorder, a tripod, CDs or tapes, a television, a computer, and video editing software.

Now remember that these are just basic tips. They’re not meant to teach you the whole world of independent filmmaking, but they do give you a quick inside look at what it takes to start one.
