Food Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Pineapple

I am a firm believer that the natural foods that we eat every day have healing properties to help our bodies recover from non-critical ailments and also in the recovery process. If we eat the right food, in the right amount, the vitamins and minerals found in food will strengthen our body systems. It can improve digestion, which in itself is a prerequisite for healing the body. With better digestion, the body can absorb the necessary minerals and vitamins, which in turn will repair the body. This is especially true for those with IBS.

So the first food remedy for irritable bowel syndrome sufferers is pineapple.

Pineapple helps digestion. Find a fresh ripe pineapple and eat it fresh. Make sure to eat only ripe pineapples. The green pineapple has a poison that can cause a drastic purge. If you don’t have fresh ripe pineapples, you can turn to canned ones. Cutting pineapple is an art. Be generous when cutting the skin of the pineapple. It is necessary to remove the crown, the bark, the eyes and the heart. One method of removing the eyes is to cut across. You can only eat the meat. Cold fresh pineapple is not only refreshing but also delicious. As much as you like pineapples, don’t overeat them either, as too much pineapple can cause fiber balls in your intestinal tract. Like everything else, avoid excessive consumption. In adequate amounts, it is a healing food.

The acidity of fresh pineapple can cause irritation of the tip of the tongue. A trick to reduce acidity is to rub the pineapple with a little salt before eating it or soak the pulp in water with a pinch of salt for a while before eating it. With canned pineapples, it is typically soaked in syrup, which diminishes the flavor and freshness.

Pineapple is a diuretic and is a natural cleanser that removes toxins from the body. It is high in vitamin C and also contains a special enzyme, called bromelain, which helps the body’s digestive system and can also reduce inflammation caused by arthritis, gout, and a sore throat. It also helps in the wound healing process after surgery or injury. Pineapple is believed to contain micronutrients that can protect against cancer, and micronutrients also break up blood clots and are beneficial for the heart. Pineapple juice is also a natural intestinal worm killer.

Immediately after each meal, eat a slice of pineapple and it will aid digestion, thereby reducing belching, gas build-up, and an upset stomach – all common symptoms of IBS. Taking a slice or two a day is fine for most IBS sufferers; just don’t eat all the fruit yourself every day. If you’re just trying, just take a slice and add to it later.

Another way to eat pineapple is to blend it to squeeze it. If you are not intolerant to milk, adding a little yogurt and blending it in a food processor produces a lassi drink. This is a traditional drink from India. Do not add sugar, especially if you are using canned pineapples. If you want, you can add a little water or ice.
