The future of fitness in 2010 and beyond

What’s going on with all you fitness-crazed braus and sisters? I hope you are well…

It’s December and it’s time to review my annual year of fitness.

Unfortunately, it appears that the fitness industry as a whole has not made great strides in providing a short-, long-, or any-term solution to our country’s large-scale obesity epidemic that is not just a national crisis (oh yes, it is a CRISIS on a damn LARGE SCALE) but, a worldwide catastrophe (Okay, officially a pandemic).

SCARY STUFF, MAN… SCARY STUFF, SCARY!

The disgusting fact that our country has become because of poor nutrition (NOTE: no, thanks to the actual crap and information perpetuated for too long from the mainstream) and lack of REAL EFFECTIVE exercise, (NOTE: GARDENING, even if it’s ALL, RED LINE, HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL WEEDING AND LAWN MOWING does not qualify as exercise…) not just fatter, more lethargic and sicker and sicker; we have been successful in transmitting to our youth a new disease called Juvenile Diabetes TYPE II. Now this is just plain NUTTS!

Man, things have screwed up big time! And, now we have to do things right. So what I’m going to do is provide some really positive strategies that, for lack of a better term, will be the fitness “trends” of 2010. These ideas will help both our youth and adult populations find the best solutions for better health and wellness.

What done is done. Now, it’s time for this country to get back to being the FIT AND STRONG nation we deserve to be!

Does that sound good to you?… Great! Here we go…

2010-The year we will finally get fit and GET. FIT. DONE.

Fitness Trend #1: Fitness Boot Camps Taking Over One-On-One Personal Training

Hey, after this two-year recession, who can afford a $60 one-on-one personal training session? Answer=Very few.

Well, with problems come solutions. And, the emergence of the fitness boot camp has provided the solution to the problem of personal training. Boot camps are the HOTTEST thing happening in the fitness world right now! The boot camp model provides the ultimate advantage for both trainers and clients, making custom training virtually obsolete. Fitness trainers can make better use of their time because they can serve larger groups and maximize profits. Fitness clients (boot camp members) can better access personal training services in a unique and dynamic team environment that provides high motivation, energy, social support, and accountability for only one-third or less of the cost of a session of average personal training.

If you’re looking to lose weight, look GREAT and feel better in 2010, do yourself a favor… save some of your hard-earned money and simply get better results by joining a local fitness boot camp.

This will be the best decision you will make ALL year!

Fitness Trend #2: Interval Training will give long, boring aerobic workouts a HUGE thrashing…SHAME!

Why is High Intensity Interval Training rapidly gaining popularity? Because it works… BIG WAY!

Crush resistance training because resistance training (lasting 30-60 minutes or more)

focuses on training volume. Here’s a typical example: Your average runner will hit the pavement for the same number of miles, at the same pace, over and over again, day after day, week after week, month after month… pounding their bodies and losing less than exciting results of that investment of time and energy. They are burning weight wasting muscle and destroying their metabolism at the same time. This method sounds like a poor ROI to someone who really wants incredible, long-lasting results from their exercise program.

Now bring the power of HIIT. High Intensity Interval Training focuses on a much more substantial variable for productive exercise; and that is quality or intensity of training. HIIT works similar to resistance training in that it stimulates the body’s systems to maintain and even gain lean tissue. And gaining muscle is the key to ‘tearing fat’, looking better, feeling better, IMPROVING METABOLISM! Hey, did you know that fat is burned in muscle? More muscle…Faster Metabolism!

Put another way: unless you want to LOOK like the top 30-minute finishers in any marathon race, it’s probably not a good idea to train like one!

If you want science behind this idea, just look at these two landmark studies:

The Tabata study and the Gibala study

2010 is the year you’ll “tear it up” with ALL-EFFORT HIIT type of work, and look better naked for it!

Fitness Trend #3: If we want to improve health, performance, and a great body, then…

We need to get rid of those unnecessary sugars in our diets!

This is not a trendy or trendy type of rhetoric. If anyone still thinks a high-carb, low-fat diet works, they probably haven’t recognized the obvious devastation this type of diet has caused.

Here is a very short list:

– 2/3 of our population is overweight/obese.

-Diabetes increased 400% since the 1986 food pyramid (Recommends many grains)

and cereals, and low-fat)

-A new disease… Juvenile-onset diabetes (another name for type II diabetes)

-The diagnosis of cancer has skyrocketed! Highest rates in history.

Hey, what does a tumor FEED on? SUGAR! Hmm…

-Cardiovascular disease (high carbohydrate diets stimulate the liver to soak the

circulation with triglycerides and LDL’s)

-High carbohydrate diets cause and support metabolic syndrome

-A recent study from John Hopkins University has changed the way doctors will treat certain cancer patients. By eliminating carbohydrates from the diets of cancer patients, oncologists have discovered that it is unnecessary to treat many types of tumors with toxic doses of chemotherapy and radiation to reduce or completely eliminate the presence of these tumors.

Great books to read and establish a solid understanding of how our bodies REALLY respond to the food we eat are:

‘The New Diet Revolution’ by Dr. Robert Atkins, MD

‘The TNT Diet’ by Jeff Volek, PhD RD.

‘Protein Power’ by Dr. Michael R. and Dr. Mary Dan Eades, MD

‘The Paleo Diet’ by Loren Cordain, PhD

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! READ!

Fitness Trend #4- Fitness Training Camps for Kids? Yes, why not!

Let’s face it, many of our school districts have limited or eliminated gym class for budget or other BS reasons. The reasons are not as important as the fact that we now have a real problem addressing the fitness of our youth outside of the school setting. (Unless the kids are involved in sports at their school.) Don’t worry though, thanks to youth coach Brian Grasso and his International Youth Conditioning Association, there is now a growing trend of youth-specific exercise programming at fitness facilities around the world. IYCA has developed incredibly effective programming that is relevant to age groups ranging from 6-9, 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18. The programming takes into account the neural development of pre and pubertal children so that they can learn and adapt movement and exercise into developmentally appropriate patterns. One really important fact regarding youth and exercise is this: Kids who are exposed to fun and effective exercise early on tend to continue a healthy, exercise-oriented lifestyle FOR LIFE!

Fitness Trend #5: Fitness Anywhere and TRX Will Rule the Fitness Haven

Man, I started using TRX four years ago. When I was throwing the straps on the cable machine at our local gym, everyone was looking at me like I had 3 heads on my shoulders.

Well, four years later I have to say “if you’re not using TRX, you’re the weird one!”

Hey, if you get a chance to use THE MOST PROGRESSIVE AND VALUABLE EXERCISE TOOL

the fitness industry has seen in years, JUST DO IT!

You may never go back to the “machines”. http://www.fitnessanywhere.com/

Alright, so those are my top 5 fitness trends for the coming year.

Now, I want to close this by asking, “If I were to give you some really easy-to-follow (well, maybe not-so-easy in practice) tips for the best one-two punch for burning belly fat for that new Year… Body New You…
