KAIROS: Trusting in God’s Timing

“To the woman he said: ‘I will greatly multiply your pains and your pregnancy; with pain you will give birth to children; your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.’ Genesis 3:16

I saw the resplendent mantle of glory from God descending from the heavens that morning.

No one has yet discovered a word for conception pain. It was indescribable. A pain not of this earth, I thought she was speaking in tongues as she repeated: “I will greatly multiply your pain and your conception; with pain you will bear children; your desire will be for your husband, and he rules over you.” — over and over on my head throughout labor.

I missed my epidural. My tiny body missed the only drug that can save me from Eva’s blessing of pain. I wanted to faint, but instead I just witnessed an unearthly darkness in the midst of my mortal consciousness. I had no idea if there was an end to the blackout tunnel. But it was worth every agonizing pain. The excruciating pain gave me the privilege to hold tight to the hands of God and his Son through a reassuring grip.

Then, I saw a pin-light come through a small hole and suddenly it turned into a shimmering robe of glory as bright as dawn.

My son, Kairos, was born.

Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning “God’s just or opportune moment.” The word Kairos is used 81 times in the Hebrew Bible and Biblical studies realized that it is a time-stopping event, a significant and special adjustment of time, made by the Lord God Himself to move His Will to the rhythm of His watch.

Kairos as a specific time that exists between regular time (“Chronos”); a moment of indeterminate time in which something unique and special happens.

It was a Kairos moment, an event where I was so amazed that time stood still and was no longer relevant. When mundane things, reality ceases, and my attention turns to that defining, specific, remarkable, special moment that holds deep meaning for me, as life itself stands still and the drama of Kairos unfolds.

It is a defining moment that affects every aspect, forever, of a person’s life, and is measured by the nature of time that is defined by quality rather than quantity. It is the experience of the time that occurs between the seconds clicking and the hands moving; time stands still as life unfolds and takes on eternal meaning. When our souls are overwhelmed with euphoria, when change comes upon us abruptly without our realizing it, the time of kairos transcends the definite time of man.

My husband and I are not planning our first child this year. What was marked in our 2014 are Maldives, Bali and some islands within the Philippines. But the LORD God is all-knowing and all-knowing, a truth of which all who believe in Him are certain. He knows everything and chooses that life occur only according to his Will.

That day was fulfilled a time, and for a moment, the time of Kairos was in the hands of me and my husband. Life became silent and time stopped when our paternity began to fulfill the Will of our Father. God’s omniscient nature is possible because time does not contain, control, or move him. He is the God of Time, and he moves it according to his Will.

All my life I knew this would be my chosen ministry: motherhood. I just didn’t know when, I didn’t know how. But in that blessedness, I too was born… along with my son, through God’s perfect timing.
