How to Get Perfect Pitch Without Years of Music Training (Seriously!)

Lots of people are learning how to get perfect pitch these days. I’m talking about all kinds of people: people over 60, people with no musical training, and people who know about music but have never known how to sing in clave. When you have this quality you can do all kinds of things like:

  • Play any song you want by ear
  • Name any note or chord just by hearing it
  • Listen to melodies in your head while reading sheet music
  • Being able to tell if a tone is sharp or flat.

And these are just a couple benefits! It is definitely the attribute you must have if you want to make it in the music performance industry.

Here’s a simple exercise, and while it’s not quite as good as a complete learning course, it can be a good start if you’re interested in learning how to get pitch perfect.

  1. Get yourself a recording device and sit down with your instrument (piano, guitar, harpsichord… whatever)
  2. Put in a blank tape and press “record”
  3. Play a note on your instrument (any note will do)
  4. Now try to sing the same note
  5. do this several times
  6. Now try the same with a different note.
  7. Continue playing different notes and trying to match them to your voice for several minutes.
  8. Stop the tape player, rewind and listen
  9. After a few sessions, you’ll start to hear a difference in whether you’re matching the note you’re playing with your voice (in key) and when you’re not (off key).
  10. After several weeks, you will be able to tell the difference easily and you will notice a marked improvement in your singing tone.

Now keep in mind that this is just one way to get a perfect shade. There are many other things you can do that are too numerous to mention here. But the sad thing is that most people don’t even realize that this skill can be learned.
