Honda Civic: successful in all markets

For more than four decades, the Honda Civic has proven to be an inspiration to automobile designers. In fact, it is the second longest continuously produced Japanese vehicle in North America. Known for its fuel economy, sporty looks, and regular upgrades, the Honda Civic has proven equally successful in all markets. It is also one of those few cars that not only managed to maintain the highest ratings in its class, but also challenged the higher class vehicles. Such a rapid transformation has allowed the Civic’s engineers to outpace its competition and prove that it is a worthy competitor to its much larger cousin, the Honda Accord. In 2000, it was reclassified as a compact car instead of a subcompact car.

The Original Honda Civic

The first Honda Civic was a small car sold in 1973. Bucket seats, electric disc brakes, standard AM radio, and fuel economy proved an instant hit with customers. Henceforth, the Civic continued its winning streak by proving to be a highly reliable model that didn’t have all the frills but could handle tough conditions. It was this reliability that helped boost sales, until 1988. By the late ’80s, it became increasingly apparent that a facelift was needed to maintain success.

main changes

Consequently, the fourth generation Honda Civic, in 1988, contained a fully independent rear suspension, increased dimensions, and a lowered hood line. Consumers were impressed by the new design features that led engineers to introduce another version three years later. The new redesigned Civic included a top-end 1.6L DOHC VTEC engine making nearly 160 hp. In addition, the improved aerodynamic styling, fuel efficiency, and sporty looks once again convinced consumers to pay a premium.

future

The next four years saw Japanese automakers focus on quality, so modifications were rare, but its fame as one of the most reliable cars remained its trump card. With the arrival of the 21st century, Honda City took a big leap by introducing flat rear floors that automatically promoted it from the subcompact class to the compact class category. Plus, a more powerful VTEC engine and a few other features had already made it more stylish than its main international rival, the Toyota Corolla. Today, the Honda Civic is known for its futuristic look and technology that has become the foundation for the success of other popular Honda versions such as the Acura, CRV, and compact SUV.
