Countertop Painting – How to Paint Laminate Countertops

If you have laminate countertops in your house, chances are you inherited them from relatives who lived during the 1970s and 1980s. This could be very outdated by now and wouldn’t fit in with your current home decor. If you can’t completely remove it in your home because of its sentimental value, you might want to try repainting it. However, you can’t just brush it off or throw paint on it. You have to do it systematically. A simple procedure could be the solution to your problems.

It really comes down to how well you prepare the countertop for the painting procedure. These are the steps on how to paint laminate countertops.

– First, you need to make sure the surface is clean. The best chemical to use is water mixed with ammonia or any ammonia-based cleaner. Use a damp cloth, sponge or soft brush to remove all impurities, dirt and grime from the surface.

– Since almost all laminate surfaces are non-porous, it would be difficult for paint to adhere without the aid of an adhesive primer. You can check it out at your local hardware or paint store. They know what to give you.

– Apply the primer and let it dry. Make sure when you do this that all windows are open and you have adequate ventilation. Make sure you have also chosen the color you want. You may want to choose something that would fit perfectly. Look at all the existing colors in the environment and use it as a reference or indicator to choose the color that you would apply on your laminate countertop.

– Choose water-based paint. Remember, this is a countertop and there is a good chance that you are placing food products on it. That is why oil-based paints should not be used. Apply the paint consistently, pausing after each coat to allow it to dry.

– Creating designs and patterns would also be an effective method to make it look more artistic and interesting.

– Finally, when the paint is dry, seal it. To do this, you will use the help of polyurethane. Adds an extra layer of protection to the surface. Be sure to choose high gloss polyurethane.

Now everything is ready. Enjoy the silence of victory while taking in the beautiful view before you.
