Autism – Ayurvedic herbal treatment

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by problems with social interactions, verbal and nonverbal communication problems, and a repetitive pattern of behavior with narrow and restricted interests. Boys are more likely than girls to have autism. Although the exact cause of autism is unknown, genetics play a role, and environmental, immunological, and metabolic factors may contribute.

Behavioral therapy, together with specific education and periodic evaluation by a multidisciplinary team, form the cornerstone in the management of children with autism. Additional Ayurvedic herbal treatment may be given to reduce bothersome symptoms and improve cognition. Herbal medicines can be given safely for long periods even to children and therefore this therapy is especially beneficial for children with autism.

Brain tissue can be treated by correcting the metabolism of “Majja” dhatu in the body. Useful medicines in this condition are: Pancha-Tikta-Ghruta Guggulu, Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) and Musta (Cyperus rotundus).

Also, Ayurveda mentions a category of medicines known as “Medhya”, which improves the working capacity of the brain. This category includes drugs such as Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Guduchi, Padma (Nelumbo nucifera), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Vacha (Acorus calamus), and Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis).

Typically, a combination of several medications is used in the treatment and management of autism. In addition to the two categories of medications mentioned above, other medications such as Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) are also commonly used. Autistic children usually require a high dose of herbal medications to get good results.

In addition to oral treatment, autistic children benefit from full-body massage treatment with medicated oils such as Chandan-Bala-Laxadi oil and Mahanarayan oil. Ayurvedic Panchkarma procedures such as “Shirodhara” and “Nasya” are beneficial for autism-related problems, but may be more suitable for older children and adults.

Treatment has to be tailored for each child according to the severity and presentation of symptoms. Also, different children may respond differently to herbal medications. Parents should avoid the temptation to treat their children on their own.
