The best can opener: can there be such a thing?

The other day my wife and I were discussing the best can opener we have. I know, it seems silly, right? But this is where we come from.

I grew up always using a manual can opener. That’s all we had, and it worked perfectly fine. My mom probably told me how to use it when she was like seven years old, and there were a lot of days and nights where my mom had to work late, so she’d end up making me canned ravioli or something. So she was constantly using our manual can opener, and I found that I really liked it.

My wife, on the other hand, says that the best can opener is an automatic one. She likes the fact that she can set it and forget it, going around the kitchen doing other things instead of opening the can. She doesn’t want to hurt her hands or find it difficult to turn the opener, so she prefers to have a machine do it for her.

This is kind of a silly conversation, right? Well believe it or not we ended up buying one of each. Turns out we’re both pretty stubborn when it comes to this sort of thing, and we both think we know the best can opener.

Do you know what the funniest thing about all this is? We almost NEVER use our can openers! Many of the things we might get in a can also come frozen, and we usually get them. We’ve heard that frozen stuff has less sodium, which is a good thing. But we’ve also heard that freezing food can harm it just like cooking it, so I guess you can never win, right?

The only time I really use the best can opener (the manual one, of course) is when we’re cooking something that involves cream of mushroom soup. We only do this a few times a year to make a green bean casserole, so basically my poor can opener just sits in an unused drawer for most of the year. It’s one of those things you really can’t do without, though, right? I mean, opening a can without a proper opener is VERY hard, and I cut myself quite a bit trying to do it while camping!

So all of that to say, the best can opener is up to you… but I prefer the manual ones.
