Learn to write well to improve your blog

As a blogging coach, I hear it all the time. “I’m not a good writer,” the blogger tells me. My answer each time is the same. You can learn to write well by writing more.

Writing is a learned skill just like reading or eating. If you wrote as much as you ate, don’t you think you’d be a better writer?

Of course.

The key to learning to write well is to write for a specific audience and write as if you are having a conversation with them. Now this type of writing doesn’t always work, but it certainly works for blogs.

As a blogger, you want to build a relationship with your audience and the easiest way to build that relationship is through conversation. Your blog should read like a conversation between you and your audience.

I assure you that the more you write, the better your grammar, spelling and voice will be. It all starts to become second nature the more you practice.

One of the biggest downsides is that people type much slower than they think. Their mind races ahead of the words on the screen and they lose their mind or direction.

This can be fixed very easily with a microphone and some dictation software. There are some great dictation software packages that do a great job of transcribing your spoken word. You might not think of this as writing and I used to not either, but it’s perfect for a blog post.

In fact, this entire article was “written” through my headphones.
