Grill Guards: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Grill guards seem like a pretty innocent purchase. After all, don’t they just protect a vehicle from debris and impacts? Any old won’t do as long as it provides a barrier? That reasoning is incorrect. If you need guards on your vehicle, chances are you already know what you’re protecting your car or truck from; choose the guards who promise to deliver. In fact, there are good, bad, and ugly guards on the market. Read about some of them below.

– The Good Grill Guards – The best examples in this category are designed to the exact specifications of your vehicle. They offer a protective barrier that doesn’t hinder your driving experience or add too much weight to the vehicle. These grill guards are often made specifically for a certain purpose. For example, if you know you are going to face situations where vehicle dents are a real possibility, guards are available to protect against them. Splash guards protect your paint job from unwanted debris, and edge guards take care of those pesky edges that seem too vulnerable in the driving experience. Good guards blend seamlessly with the aesthetics of the car or truck and do not give the car or truck a less than favorable appearance. Simply put, good grill guards do what they are told to do.

– The bad protectors – The bad protectors will not fit your vehicle. They are too big or too small. Shields that are too large add unnecessary weight to the driving experience, adding wind resistance and, as a result, increasing fuel needs. The miles per gallon drop in this situation, which is never a good scenario for the wallet. Guards that are too small will not fully protect the vehicle, leaving you wondering why you installed them. After all, what good is a grill guard if it doesn’t protect your investment? Finally, bad protection looks ugly on your car or truck. It does not match or complement the paint job. Instead, it looks like an accessory that is not part of the original package.

– The ugly guards – These grill guards are not only the wrong size for the vehicle, they are also installed incorrectly. They pose a safety threat to the driver, who may look down on a long road trip and find their guard flapping in the breeze. The worst grill guards disintegrate on impact and are downright ugly. Ugly guards add nothing to the driver experience except negative connotations.
