BSOD Errors: The Blue Screen of Lost Work

What is a BSOD?

Blue Screen of Death or BSOD errors are probably the oldest type of registry-related errors.

What operating system is affected?

BSODs are only common on older versions of MS Windows i.e. 95, 98, Me etc. but can occur on newer versions as well.

Why BSOD errors

Well, because BSOD errors are a built-in security feature: your computer triggers them when it encounters an error it can’t resolve. It is a way to stop the PC before any possible damage is done. Once a BSOD error occurs, there’s basically nothing you can do but reboot your PC (well, that’s the meaning of the ‘screen of death’). In the process, of course, you will lose a few hours of work.

How to resolve blue screen errors

Most of the BSODS are resolved with a simple restart of the PC. But if you have more serious problems on your PC, expect them to come visit you sometime later.

What can I do to resolve Blue Screen of Death errors?

The simple answer is: solve the cause. Well, seriously, here are some simple tips to avoid BSOD freezes (and resolve them when they happen):

  • Get yourself a registry cleaner. BSOD errors are often caused by a registry conflict. By downloading and running a good registry cleaner, you can remove old files, restore missing DLL files, and improve your computer’s overall performance.
  • Updated your drivers – I personally advise against third party drivers. Of course, most work just fine. But these drivers can have their own problems and can even be the cause of new BSOD errors! If possible, try to get the drivers directly from the device vendor. In fact, most would allow you to download updates completely free of charge.
  • Avoid Vista (most people already hate it anyway) – This operating system is relatively new and there are still driver issues that the folks at Microsoft haven’t completely fixed. I suggest you wait a little longer before you run out of downloading your version of XP.
